Sweet basil has been known to humanity for aeons. In India, where it was first mentioned in Vedic texts over 5000 years ago, it was known to be a protector, and grown around temples and placed with the dead to keep them safe. It was known to the ancient Egyptians, who used it to embalm the dead. And in Greece, where it was used in mourning rituals, basil was known as the kingly herb. Even in medieval times, basil was known to lift the spirits. Today, it’s much loved for its culinary value and of course for its anti-viral, anti-microbial and anti-oxidant properties.
